How are two hands of the same type compared?

When two players have the same category of poker hand, the ranks inside that combination are compared. With one pair, for example, the higher pair wins. If the pairs are equal, the remaining kicker cards are compared from highest to lowest.

How many cards can you use in Texas Hold'em?

Every player has two hole cards and there can be five community cards on the table. The final hand is simply the strongest five-card combination available from those seven cards.

This means a player can use both hole cards, only one hole card or neither hole card.
